Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA) will join the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) at the TETSiM Report Validation Workshop in Abuja, Nigeria, on September 11, 2025.

Organised as part of the Tobacco Tax Advocacy in Africa project, the workshop seeks to validate findings from the Tobacco Excise Tax Simulation Model (TETSiM) for Nigeria. The TETSiM tool evaluates the potential impact of changes in excise tax structures on cigarette prices, consumption patterns, and government revenues, while also highlighting broader public health and socio-economic implications.

Nigeria’s current tobacco tax regime expired in May 2025, so the validation workshop comes at a critical time. It will provide policymakers, tax administrators, and stakeholders with fact-based scenarios tailored to Nigeria’s context, supporting evidence-driven decisions in shaping the next phase of tobacco taxation.

The workshop aims to build a sense of national ownership of the TETSiM findings and strengthen policy dialogue on how tobacco taxation can both reduce tobacco affordability and generate much-needed domestic revenue.

Participants will engage in plenary discussions and breakout sessions to review the methodology, interrogate scenario results, and contribute inputs that will refine the report. The final validated TETSiM report will serve as a key reference for upcoming tobacco tax policy reviews in Nigeria.

TJNA’s engagement underscores its commitment to advancing progressive tax reforms that safeguard public health while strengthening domestic resource mobilisation across Africa.
