The International Day of Education, observed annually on 24 January, reaffirms the fundamental role of education in building peace, advancing sustainable development, and strengthening global solidarity. It serves as a reminder that education is not only a human right, but also a shared investment in humanity’s collective future.

This year’s theme, “The power of youth in co-creating education,” places young people at the centre of educational transformation. It recognises youth as key partners in shaping inclusive, relevant, and future-ready education systems—not merely as passive recipients of learning.

Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA) joins civil society organisations, global agencies, and education partners in commemorating this important observance.

As an institution committed to social justice and equitable development, TJNA acknowledges the indispensable contributions of young people in advocating for fair, accountable, and transparent systems, including within the education sector.

Young people continue to play a frontline role in sustaining access to learning. They often step in as community mobilisers, peer educators, and champions for equitable access, particularly in contexts where traditional education systems are disrupted.

TJNA remains steadfast in its mission to nurture a new generation of tax justice advocates across Africa through initiatives such as the International Tax Justice Academy (ITJA). The Academy brings together participants from across the continent to strengthen their understanding of taxation, governance, and public finance, critical areas that directly influence educational investment and broader social development outcomes.

According to TJNA’s Capacity Building Coordinator, Geoffrey Sirima, the Academy adopts a hands-on, interdisciplinary approach to learning that combines theory with real-world application.

“Through case studies, discussions, and interactive exercises, participants explore tax issues at both local and global levels. They engage with topics such as tax evasion, Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs), and the urgent need for reform in the international tax system,” Mr Sirima explains.

Together with its partners, TJNA is committed to advancing policies that promote fair and just financing for public services. Tax justice remains central to building strong education systems that are adequately funded, inclusive, and capable of nurturing the next generation of African leaders.

On this International Day of Education, we celebrate the role of youth as co-creators of knowledge and catalysts for positive change. We honour their contributions and reaffirm our commitment to fostering a future in which education, integrity, and justice guide Africa’s development.
